Problem Space

Kiyomizu Temple ( "Pure Water Temple") is one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. It has always been a popular destination for experiencing local Zen vibe and culture. But with over-tourism, the masses have disrespected, thronged, and vandalized Kiyomizu natural scenes and fabricated for as long as they have been visiting them.

The loudness, flows, to some extent, weaken the Zen vibe and go against the Kiyomizu original culture.

Kiyomizu Temple Today

Solution

Integrating photogrammetry and panoramic video, we design a virtual reality journey connecting iconic zen impressions of Kiyomizu along the user's path. The journey also refers to the painting from Hiroshige.

Solution

Process

1) Fly to Japan (Hooray!)

2) Field research on Kiyomizu temple

3) Decide on and capture the iconic impressions of Kiyomizu temple and surroundings

(e.g.  the water basin in front of Shrine that has a sprit of ' purifying yourself'

the basin in the temple lobby that has a spirit of ' blessing for next year')

4)Design Storytelling in Unity with models scanned on-site or built in 3d modeling program

5)Polish scenes

6)Implement User Interaction using C#

7)Test and iterate

In general, the journey has five main parts:

P1 Start:  Cherry blossom is one of the main attractions of the Kiyomizu temple. The journey starts on a path to the boarding deck with Sakura trees along where users will meet and follow the guide roles.

P2 Boarding Deck: The boarding deck is where users wait for the wooden boat and are transferred to the other side. While on the boat, guide roles will give a short introduction about the history of Kiyomizu Temple.

P3 Tea House: The Tea House is based on the Takinoya tea house next to Kiyomizu Temple, combined with Hiroshige's historical painting, it has a tea table and Tatami inside. Users can use controllers to interact with the tea-making toolset on the table.

P4 Parallel World: After the rest at the tea house, users will start walking uphills and walk across several translucent bubble space where immersive videos of in realistic how tourists are interacting with objects and features in Kiyomizu Temple (e.g. scoop water from water basin for 'purifying spirit'...)

P5 Kiyomizu Temple:  The destination of the journey is Kiyomizu Temple, where multiple details are 3d modeled and related to Kiyomizu Temple painted by Hiroshige.
