PRODUCTION
Feeding the world in a sustainable way is one of our most pressing challenges in the coming decades. Meat plays a pivotal role in this. Global meat consumption has increased rapidly over the past 50 years – It has been estimated that global meat consumption may double from 2000 to 2050.
YOUR CHOICE
Do you know how many green house gases went into your plate?
EMISSION
Compared to the other food, the production of meat has large environmental impacts, among which, the most severe one is increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Meat takes much more grain, land and water to fatten an animal to produce a pound of meat than it does to grow the same number of calories in the form of grain that is eaten directly.
Everyone's diet matters to our planet.

Tea Maker Guest House

Background
The retreat and tea farm is a popular destination for meditation and eco-fitness seekers, surrounded by a landscape of wetlands, meadows, pastures, trees, and a lake. As an eco-tourism destination, the retreat is by definition be sustainable and has a positive impact on its environment.
Our proposal for the tea makers guest house also coalesces with its ambient at large which provides visitors a living-with-nature experience. Based on the analyses of the local climate, we strategically make use of the existing structure and material from the barn, organize space according to ventilation and daylight, create well-lit, breathable, comfortable double-height common space to promote the physical and mental health of the visitors as well as their well-being. New volume is added to the northeast side of the building for accommodation which has a panorama view of the breathtaking forest around the building.
Climate Context

Finding 1
Based on the weather data of Priekuli(closest to our site), the wind rose for the site area in each season are shown above. The prevailing wind direction is basically from south to southwest and the average wind speed is approximately 3m/s.
The existing stonewalls are natural fences against the cold winter wind from the south, yet somehow prevent the cool breeze coming from the same direction in summer. In order to fully exploit the potential for natural ventilation through spring to autumn while keeping away the winter wind, the stone wall on the south and southwest are kept and the wind capture is conducted by the specially designed windows penetrating through the stone walls.

Finding 2
As shown in the psychrometric chart above, without any passive or active strategy, most of the time throughout the year in Priekuli area are out of the comfort range due to the low air temperature and relatively higher humidity.
Certain passive strategies can largely relieve this disadvantage and extend the comfort range, two remarkable ways are keeping internal heat gain and passive solar heating. The former requires a material with higher heat capacity while the latter requires maximum solar heat gain during winter. The stone base and wooden material used in the existing barn meet perfectly the requirement, which was largely inherited in our new proposal. For passive solar heating, making use of the south sun is an effective way while we should balance the heat gain during summer as well.
